  1. I just came across your site and wanted to say great work so far!

I am interested in getting a kit my self and was wondering if it has everything that i would need to make a 100% operational disk

    ReplyDelete
  2. Hi Ron - it includes everything except typical DIY tools like a Philips screwdriver, soldering iron, solder, glue gun, hot melt glue, wire strippers, Dremel with cutoff disc and routing bit, and a good plastic adhesive like E-6000

    ReplyDelete
  3. thats great.. just for my understanding the USB vs pre-programed kit.. is that i can if i wanted to flash new code with the usb version and not with the pre-programed one? or are both flashable?

    ReplyDelete
  4. You can flash new code on both versions - the microcontroller is the same. If you have the cable I figure you are going to tweak it anyway... the source code is available on our bitbucket site. To flash it before shipping it costs me about the same as a cable (just takes a few minutes).

  5. I'm looking to purchase the LED Kit preprogrammed and a new Front Inner C Ring (not for a few weeks, I don't have the money right now, but I will be buying from you). I am kind of a beginner with wiring and such. Are you including detailed documentation with the kit?

Now I don't know much, but I have done some research on different wiring techniques, and I cam across the idea of wiring the LEDs in a combination of series and parallel. Would this still pose the power problems?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Thanks for the quick response, that has help me decide to go ahead and order the kit right now with all the addons.. I picked up my disk at target for 14.95! the only had the Sam disk ... But im hoping i can get a Kevin disk also..

Looking forward to giving this kit a go..

  7. It is always good to ask. If you are ordering a white/white or orange/white kit I have one of each in stock and ready to ship. Other colors take a while because I get all the LEDs from an overseas vendor that I trust (but it takes a few weeks).

    ReplyDelete
  8. i just purchased a kit this morning and was curious what the wait time was on that, yesterday you said you had one white white kit left... did i snag that one :) if i did that would be super awesome because im looking forward to having my hubby build mine asap!

    -Tiffanni

    ReplyDelete
  9. @rawrdanni - you got the last one in stock. Should go out Monday. Will e-mail a tracking number when it does (you too Ron... I am casting your blade as we speak).

    ReplyDelete
  10. Orpex, i got the kit yesterday! so excited to get to work on it... thank you so much keeping me updated on the status of the order it was very much appreciated..

im probably going to get started working on it today

    ReplyDelete
  11. What software do we need to flash the code to the unit?

    ReplyDelete
  12. @Ron - I flashed it for you but you can get the code "sketch" from the bitbucket site and use an IDE (WinAVR if you are on Windows). That way you can modify it if you like. I posted this on the wiki: https://bitbucket.org/orpex/identity-disc/wiki/Programming

  13. Let me first say this is an awesome mod! I was searching for modded ID discs and arrived at your site :) Didn't expected it and almost just went ahead and bought a Disney disc online.

I am wondering if you are still accepting orders to build a completely modded disc? I am looking at your drop down options and see that depending on the starting disc, some options are not available. I am curious as to why? (sorry about my ignorance!) I am looking for a fully modded disc based on Kevin Flynn's, would it have the same modded look and functionality as the Sam version (except it's white)?

Please let me know - and thanks again for the awesome mod!

    ReplyDelete
  14. @Cagava I am accepting orders... if you work the form from top to bottom you should be able to set up the following options:

Kevin Flynn (White with White) $44.95 (2 in stock)
Remove Track Only $42.05 **because the Kevin Flynn disc comes with a clear C ring we don't need to replace it**
    Route/Replace Back $48.40
Cut Tabs (Use Factory Rim) $6.01 **because the Kevin Flynn disc comes with a clear blade we just need to trim the fat**
    LED Kit (Installed) $208.94
    Kevin Flynn (Cold White)

Should end up with a subtotal of $344 plus $5 shipping in USA. If you order today you will have it by 5/16/2011.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thank you very much! I live in Toronto, Canada - how much would shipping be? And would be it by US Postal Service?

    ReplyDelete
  16. @Cagava to Toronto is $15. I typically use USPS (I just sent one to Singapore a week or so ago for a Blu-ray release party on the 5th and it got there already). If that sours the deal for you then I wouldn't mind trying UPS or FedEx for the same price.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thanks orpex :) USPS is fine. I do apologize as another sudden need is taking priority at the moment, so I won't be able to order right now. I really appreciate you explaining the details though - and I hope to be able to contact you again about the disc soon!

    ReplyDelete
  18. p.s. the stand you made a few days ago for the disc is awesome! I would definitely get one if I order the disc :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I left the last post about the clear casts... don't know why my username came out like all jumbled that... sorry for any confusion :)

    This was my last post:
Hey orpex, nice work you're doing! I'm just need a few (5 or so) clear cast fron inner C rings, and blade rims. Just curious on what the wait would be for those items. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  20. @Tsumonic it would take a couple weeks... I only have one blade mold so I can only cast one a day-ish. If you ordered today (I can invoice you when you know the exact quantity and you are ready) they should ship by 4/20.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Amazing project and just what my disc is waiting for. Will you have full install instructions with the kits? Do you have some close up images of what you get with the kits? What would the postage cost be for UK?

    ReplyDelete
  22. @Utakos thanks! We are working on the instructions but you can see the kind of detail we are documenting at https://bitbucket.org/orpex/identity-disc/wiki/Home and here are some pictures of what you get in the kit (sans the hot melt glue sticks) http://orpex.blogspot.com/2011/03/pictures-below-are-what-you-get-in-kit.html
Postage to UK is a flat $15.95 (£9.79). Thanks for looking!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Orpex, love the kit so far i finally got around to really start working on it, the only problems im having is i really do not understand the wiring.. How the led's are wired to the controller.. if you can maybe try to explain better to me

    ReplyDelete
  24. @Ron - I just posted a couple of pictures (schematic and parts layout) on the main page. I only have the blade mock-up right now. Let me know if it helps!

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Orpex that is perfect, i will be working on getting the outter ring LED's mounted this week, i have the inner-c around mounted.

    thanks for the quick response

    ReplyDelete
  26. Could you possibly provide detailed pictures of the interior of one of your modified discs? I'd like to get started on my disc now that the parts have arrived and I have completed all prep work on the disc, but I am unsure about some parts of the install since the bitbucket instructions are incomplete.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I was interested in getting the lighting kit and was wondering if it was possible to use the lights from the back c ring as part of the outside ring lighting? I wasn't planning on cutting out the back c ring on mine. Thank you for your time.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @jedijeff - You certainly could... total of 45 LED's on the outer ring instead of 30 using the extra row wire. You would have to alter the program slightly but that is why we make the source code available.

@Cracksmurf - I have shipped all the ones that I have modded. You have been through the blog pictures already? I need to copy those to the bitbucket site but I tried to get nice close-up pictures along the way so _I_ didn't forget how to do it LOL

    ReplyDelete
  29. I placed an order and can't wait to get the LED Kit. I was also thinking about making one of my discs into a sort of nightlight using a 9V AC adapter. Could I get extra leds from you?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ah ok, I wasn't aware there were pics on the blog. thanks I'll look at that.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @jedijeff - Thanks for the order! I can include 62 additional white LEDs for $5 - you can just send it PayPal to reskin@pol.net

@Cracksmurf - it has been an ongoing effort experimenting with different methods and documenting the do's and dont's. Let me know if you have questions!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I keep coming up with more ideas while I wait for my kit to arrive. :) Now I would like to try casting a disc holder and baton. I saw in a previous post you are using 75-60 Urethane Mold Rubber for the mold, but I didn't find what you used to cast your rings. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. If you have a link to a site with good information that would be cool also. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hey Orpex,

I see that you have a Blade (Rim) Modification that states "No blade(Costume Version)", does this mean you have a modified version of the blade that has the excess rubber removed, or does this mean you'll be just removing the Blade from the disc?

    ReplyDelete
  34. @jedijeff - I tried casting with PET because it was simpler and cheaper but it shrinks slightly so I switched to epoxy at some point and never looked back. I get everything from tapplastics.com - little pricey but great customer service and instructional videos.

@max - I have heard some argument about whether or not there is a ring in the costume prop (certain angles you can see what could only be explained as inner-C ring LED's from the rim). This was intended to be a less expensive screen-accurate version (half the labor) but if you have something specific in mind shoot me a pic or vid!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Orpex,

Well I guess what I would like to have done would be a special request, in which it might be out of the question but I was wondering if you could make a modified version of the blade so that it is flushed with the edge of the disc. I know that may be too much to ask especially since you would only probably making one mold for it. But maybe you can make a mold for it, and I can reimburse you your cost of the mold.

Here are some mock up images of what I mean:
Image 1 is the normal Deluxe Identity Disc with the original blade(trim)
    http://img806.imageshack.us/img806/5606/mockup1.png
Image 2 is the same image only with the Blade(trim) flushed with the edge of the Disc.
    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/9379/mockup2.png

    ReplyDelete
  36. @Max - I think it might be more cost-effective to just make a wooden template of the outer edge of the disc and use a router to route down a clear cast blade (or the factory blue one). The molds cost me almost $50 in supplies alone. I can try that for you if you buy a blade - invariably we get one that has a bubble in it every once in a while that would have to be pitched that would otherwise work perfect if it was cut down to the rim edge.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @max - I am trying to do the same thing to see how it would look when lit. I'm trying to cut the original ring and I still have a few methods left to try, but it looks like it may require a mold. :(

    ReplyDelete
  38. @orpex,
I have tried to cut the excess rubber of the blade to make it flush with the disc, though the edge isn't smooth it is jagged. Do you think if you gave it a try you would have the same outcome?
    @jedijeff,
I have tried lighting it with the blade that I have trimmed. I like the concept though the edge of the blade isn't smooth it becomes jagged.

    ReplyDelete
  39. @Max I wonder if the difference is cutting the rubber? (I don't have a clue what material they used at Spin Master but it smells) The epoxy cuts nice, shapes nice, holds form, etc. Are you using a hot-knife to cut the rubber blade? Or an X-acto?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I will try cutting a piece of acrylic with a router. It's a lot cheaper and it might cut easier and smoother than the original blade does. I was also thinking about making a Clu version. Knew I should have ordered some inner c rings when I bought the lighting kit, which just arrived today. :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi! I would like to buy the Sam Flynn Disc. I need to know what I need as well as the cost. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  42. @32524eba-87c7-11e0-ab7e-000bcdcb2996 you should be able to use the form above to make your choices. We sell unmodified discs, kits, and full mods. Thanks for looking.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wow, this is exactly what I needed. I have a standard Sam disc that I'd love to get changed to Gibson green. Thing is, I wanna keep this cheap. New C-rings and blade, no sound effects. I'd like the blade flicker, but if steady lights are cheaper, I'd go with that instead. What's the cheapest option for Step 5?

    ReplyDelete
  44. @Dex Antares - The SMD route is by far the cheapest. We have the kit for $30 and it is a pretty easy DIY project. I can do the whole job too (I just posted a Gibson on my blog that I completed last week).

    ReplyDelete
  45. re: @ orpex: What does the kit include? What tools would I need to install it? For that matter, would you be willing to sell the Gibson you just completed?

    ReplyDelete
  46. @Dex Antares - Follow this link https://bitbucket.org/orpex/identity-disc/wiki/Parts_List_SMD for the parts list and this link https://bitbucket.org/orpex/identity-disc/wiki/Tools_and_Supplies for the tools needed. I can sell you the Gibson for $100... he had no electronics upgrade. I can do one with SMD for $200 (installed) or one with a controller for $325.

    ReplyDelete
  47. @Orpex: Will you have some Gibson's available in the future? I'd like to save up for one with the SMD mod, but I've got bills to pay right now.

    ReplyDelete
  48. @Dex I added the Gibson as a regular option now... when you chose an inner-C ring it will prompt you for the color. You should be able to buy the complete Gibson kit (including an extra back inner-C if you want to route out a track) anytime you are ready - I ain't going anywhere!

    ReplyDelete
  49. What exact options do I choose to get the SMD LED version in the lower right?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ok These are some great looking mods, but I'm having a little difficulty understanding what I need to order, to get what I'm after.

I already have a deluxe sam flynn disc, but i want to upgrade the lighting (that's why I'm here) I'm looking at getting the SMD LED version, however I am confused by the selections of front and back inner c-rings, and the blade.

Am I correct in thinking that in order to have the lights show on the back of the disc I need to order the back inner c-ring part, however the front c-ring and blade do not need to be replaced if I am sticking with the blue colour?

A final question I had was that you say (in the show more section of improve the lighting) the SMD LED version is not rechargeable. Is this because it is not possible to power these lights with a rechargeable battery, or was it in order to keep the price of the kit down?

My apologies for the length of the post, and the multiple questions, but I am very impressed and excited about the possibility of using your kits to mod my disc.
    Many thanks

    ReplyDelete
  51. @socness are you wanting a DIY kit or do you want it delivered like that? To receive that unit in the mail choose Sam Flynn, Remove/Replace Front (Clear), Route/Replace Back (Clear), Replacement Rim (Clear), SMD Kit (Installed, White) you should come up with $235.95 (plus $5 shipping).

    ReplyDelete
  52. @Scrumpy thank for looking! I am understanding that you want to DIY the mod on your own disc, right?

If you are sticking with the factory blue ring you will still need to remove the track and glue it in place so that the light strip hits it more uniformly. You do not need to do the back but if you want another factory rim to match the front I can do that for $6.35.

You should also be aware that the factory rings have little notches in them for the 2 factory LED's... these are slightly visible from the front since there is less plastic in those areas. The ones I cast do not have the notches stamped out.

Regarding the non-rechargeable - the SMD strips typically run at 12V... the Lithium Polymer recharge system (very small) is 7.4V. I haven't been able to find a 14.8V LiPo that will fit in the disc. I suppose we could try two 7.4V's in series with a big resistor to get the 12V even but the low price has most people looking past the fact that you can't recharge it.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ok thanks that makes more sense now

So if I ordered front and back inner c-ring parts, the disc could show the lights of the c-ring on both sides, and if I ordered them in blue they'd match with the blade that came with the original disc?

That makes sense about the batteries, I'll just stick with the originals on that, but thank you for the clarification.

Thanks again, and also thanks for the impressively quick response.

    ReplyDelete
  54. @Scrumpy you would have to route out the plastic on the back of the disc but yes you would have light on both sides. If you want a genuine factory part select the "Blue" color and send a note either through PayPal or in response to your receipt... I handle exceptions more than I want to... ;)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Super sweet, I will likely place an order within the next few days.

You have been very helpful, it would surprise me if you had less than 100% customer satisfaction and therefore I think you should be able to cast yourself your own medal.

    Many Thanks again
    Scrumpy

    ReplyDelete
  56. @Scrumpy awww shucks - you made my day!

    ReplyDelete
  57. So you can get the Inner and back C to be yellow right? I'm not seeing where I can select a color. I need this before Halloween.. so it sounds like I may have to just get the kit and do it myself, but I would appreciate any help from you. Looks like you do great work!

    ReplyDelete
  58. @Noaa once you select the part the color drop-down should become visible. If you order this week I can guarantee delivery by Halloween but yours would be the last completed disc before Halloween. I will be posting a Rinzler here shortly that I just completed with the SMD kit. I can also just supply the parts and kit for you - it is a pretty fun DIY project.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Orpex, based on your expertise, would it be possible to create an LED startup sequence with LED lights in the inner C ring using your kit, but then use the SMD kit for the blade?

    ReplyDelete
  60. @Denevive absolutely. There is enough room for the two extra batteries for the SMD strip and the switch comes with two poles so the circuits are kept separate but on the same switch. The microcontroller doesn't have the wattage to run the SMD though if that is what you were thinking of doing. Are you wanting it as a DIY? I can knock $10 off the SMD kit and $10 off the LED kit (you don't save much because all we are losing are the C-ring LEDs).

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yes, this would be a DIY project. I am also interested in getting a back C ring so that I can route out the back to light up. I am certainly interested in purchasing from you. How would I order this? Also, if I was to order from you today, what kind of turn around/delivery time could I expect for my order? (Back C ring, LED kit for boot up sequence/inner c ring light, and SMD kit for blade light)

    ReplyDelete
  62. @Denevine you should be able to set the order up the way you want above and check out (including the extra back C-ring part). If you order today and you are just getting the kit we are looking at the 20th if you are in the US.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Orpex, I don't know what I'm doing wrong here. I still don't see a color selection. Can I send you an email and we can work it out there? Is it a very difficult DIY? Now that I'm looking at a disc that I have, is it difficult to remove the back inner C? How much would it be if I have you do the entire thing?

    ReplyDelete
  64. @Noaa no problem. I don't post the email because stupid bots keep spamming me but you can reach me through the contact me page on the top right navigation or copy/paste http://orpex.blogspot.com/p/contact-me.html into your browser.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I apologize for being so confused but I want to order the Sam Flynn disc. If I do not have a disc, what modifications will I need for the LED microcontrolled version with you installing it. I want to make sure I am ordering the correct modifications. If I order today, will I get it by Halloween? Thank you in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  66. @32524eba-87c7-11e0-ab7e-000bcdcb2996 no worries. We accepted our last complete mod order (not to be confused with parts and kits) until November. You would have to set it up with the disc of your choice (Sam Flynn, Kevin Flynn, Rinzler) and then modify it by removing/replacing the front C-ring with the color of your choice, routing a track for the back C-ring of your choice, choosing it with a replacement blade (or removing the tabs) or doing it without the blade as an option. Then it will let you select either the kit or full install of the LED version. Work the form from top to bottom and make sure you have javascript enabled on your browser. Please use the "Contact Me" link on the top right if you still have trouble and I can send you a screen shot or even invoice you.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Just received mine in the post today, can't wait to start work on it.

I was just checking the bitbucket site for the instructions though, and past installing the c-rings I can't tell which instructions are for the SMD version, they seem to be all for the micro controlled version. A little clarification as to assembly would be greatly appreciated, as I'm not exactly an electronics guru.

    Many thanks again
    -Scrumpy

  68. I am extremely impressed in your organization of this site! i hope i can get a design together and get some fabric!

    ReplyDelete
  69. @Scrumpy - Sorry for the delayed response, you guys are keeping my production queue full! You are correct in identifying that oversight. I will upload some pictures and instructions tonight to https://bitbucket.org/orpex/identity-disc/wiki/Installation

    ReplyDelete
  70. Hi,
Are you still accepting disc orders?

As I would love to purchase a custom disc (I'm terrible with wiring) and it's been a nightmare to find a mod disc look as good as yours.

I'm a little confused on the ordering process. What would I need to select to get a disc just like the one in your video; http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=rntqKfP_0rI

    ReplyDelete
  71. @Daniel_Cyrus I responded to your contact form https://unistellar.fogbugz.com/default.asp?84

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hello, what would it cost me to have you make me a Rinzler Identity Disc: Price of the disc, amber inner c-ring and white outer blade? I don't need any fancy light effects, I just would like the disc to light up. Non rechargeable, battery powered is fine too. Oh, and how do I go about ordering the disc from you?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Sorry, I am not currently taking orders because I can't get parts (eBay fail). Normally that disc would cost $338 + $5 S/H (assuming you want C-rings lit up on the top and bottom of the disc). If you only want the top C-ring replaced it would be $265 + $5 S/H. Thanks for looking!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Ugh! Well, when you're able to get the parts, how about the price of the kit, minus the disc, and I'll do all the assembling myself? Oh, and yes, I'd like both the top and bottom C-rings to light up.

    ReplyDelete
  75. SMD LED kit, two C-rings, and a new blade will run you $81.09 including shipping. Are you having trouble with the form up at the top of this page? If you have javascript enabled on your browser you can make different selections and get an instant price update. You just can't hit the "buy" button right now.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Orpex I am a big fan of your work!!
I had been hunting around for any decent Identity Disc Mods, and yours stood way above the rest! Ive had to wait a couple of months to get the funds together to buy a kit from you.
I have an Identity Disc, and a dremmel and im pretty handy with stuff if i have good instructions.
I want to go for the SMD LED version, what will I need?
And do you ship to the UK?
    Many thanks :)

    ReplyDelete
  77. @Jedi Kal-el I appreciate the positive feedback! We ship flat-rate to UK for $15. The SMD LED kit is $30 but you will also probably want to replace the blade and C-ring with replacement parts. The tools, pictures, and assembly instructions are on my wiki page at https://bitbucket.org/orpex/identity-disc/wiki/Home
